Current Reads 09/2015
So, my reading has been a bit sporadic lately. I’ve started and almost finished a series this month and hope to start a new series by the end of the month.
I started the Wolves of Mercy Falls series a while ago, but finished the second book (Linger) earlier this month and am currently reading the third book (Forever). It got WAY better after the first book, it was a struggle to just finish Shiver but I’m glad I made it through it. The coolest part of this whole quartet is how each book has a different color font that corresponds with the cover colors.
Shiver was pretty meh to me. I’ve noticed a lot of people don’t really touch on this series like it was never written. Like the synopsis’ are pretty vague on what the books are really about; but if you’re into werewolves you’re gonna like how the story goes. After I got about 3/4 of the way through the book it finally got interesting to me. More action and stuff going on, period. The blue font also was getting harder to read toward the end and it was making my eyes start to hurt. Don’t get me wrong, I love the whole idea of it being unique to the series, but at least make it dark enough where it won’t hurt the readers eyes. As far as the story goes, I can see where it was loosely compared to Twilight (ughhh) but I didn’t really find it being a full on copy cat of it. First off, there’s no creepy sparkly vampires; it’s just werewolves. Yeah, the girl falls for one… but there’s a gazillion stories about girls falling for supernatural creatures out there; I liked Maggie’s take on it (I’ve read quite a few of said stories in my time), she had some unique elements going on with it. I give book one 3.5 stars.
Linger was far better as a sequel. I enjoyed it almost all the way, but towards the end it was getting slowish. The green font was getting sort of hard to read as I neared the end. This story slightly picked up right where the last one ended, which was amazing since I hadn’t read it for a few months. I may of had to google for the last chapter of the first book to see where I left off haha. This book was much, MUCH more fast paced than the last. I enjoyed how to added more characters to the story and gave them some good backstories. I literally FLEW through this book. I think it took me at most a week to finish between work and sleeping. The story got really interesting, therefore it made me want to marathon this series which I currently am. Hahaha.
Forever is the one I’m currently reading. I’m probably 3 or 4 chapters into it and I’m not really into it just yet. I’m hoping it gets a lot better; as far as I remember this was supposed to be the last book in the series at one point. I don’t know a lot about the last book, Sinner, however. I recently bought it for around $5 on clearance at a local bookstore. But there is 78 chapters in Forever which is just odd since its kind of a short book (I’m comparing the length to the third book of Harry Potter and Twilight Saga which I still have to finish haha); I’m also still not into the whole different perspective changes several times per chapter. It gets confusing really fast, I start thinking to myself “Didn’t I just read this?!” when it happens so often.
I’m hoping this helped in choosing whether or not to read this series based on my personal opinions. It’s pretty good once you get over the first book slump. It took me MONTHS to read, and I almost didn’t even finish it because I have a couple of shelves worth of books in my TBR pile.
My next adventure is going to possibly be Monstumologist series or ever starting a standalone for a bit since I’ve been marathoning this series. I’ve been really into the whole horror/thriller genres lately; I blame Hallowe’en coming up, but then Hallowe’en is everyday for me. I may begin The Merciless by Danielle Vega, it’s like an occult version of mean girls from what I’ve heard. Also, I’ve been listening to a lot of random music lately. I’ll post a playlist or two of what I’ve been listening to while reading.
